The Drop 5 Effect

A Membership to Five Iron might be the GLP-1 your game needs

We recently surveyed our members, and the results spoke louder than any marketing campaign ever could: on average, Five Iron golfers are dropping 5 strokes off their handicap or scoring average. Five strokes. That's real, measurable improvement happening under our roof.

And just like those miracle weight loss drugs everyone's talking about, the results seem almost too good to be true. But here's the thing, they're not magic. They're the product of combining expert golf instruction, year-round access to the best golf simulator technology, and a community that actually makes you want to practice

Real Members, Real results

Will Graf joined Five Iron in 2021, hovering in that familiar 15-20 handicap range most recreational golfers know well. Today? He's posted multiple rounds in the 70s and dropped his handicap index to 5.5 at its lowest. "I've gone from being happy to break 90 to posting multiple rounds in the 70s," he says, "the data the Trackman provides is valuable in identifying certain aspects of the swing you should work on."

Then there's Matthew Goodnight from 5i Pittsburgh, who went from shooting in the 130s to breaking 90 in less than a year as a member! Or Meghan Young in Philadelphia, whose scores dropped from the 110–120s into the 90s. "My friends and family who have played with me since joining Five Iron will comment on how much my game has improved," she noted. "I'm enjoying golf so much more because I'm playing better."

These aren't cherry-picked success stories, either. They're representative of what's happening across our network when golfers have consistent access to a high-quality indoor golf practice space, professional feedback, and technology that turns every swing into actionable data.

Why the Traditional Golf Lesson model fails most golfers

Let's be honest: most golfers buy a golf lesson package in March, show up twice, and then let the rest collect dust while they convince themselves they'll "figure it out on the course." The occasional driving range session doesn't build muscle memory. One-off lessons don't create lasting change. And outdoor practice disappears entirely for half the year in many parts of the country.

Five Iron membership works differently. It removes every barrier between you and improvement:

Daily access means tons of reps. Alex Snodgrass from 5i Atlanta put it perfectly: "There were a lot of 4-hour swing sessions involved" in going from shooting in the 120s to breaking 90 in a single year. That kind of dedicated practice time simply isn't possible (or at least cost-effective) at a traditional driving range, especially when weather becomes a factor.

Technology creates accountability. Every ball you hit on our golf simulators generates data: club speed, ball flight, angle of attack, spin rate, and like 40 other metrics. Our Trackman technology doesn't let you lie to yourself about that slice. The camera system shows you exactly what's happening in your rotation. This instant feedback loop accelerates learning in ways that standing on a mat at an outdoor range never could.

Expert instruction becomes part of your routine, not a special occasion. Our golf coaches are accessible, not aspirational. Members start with a free Swing Evaluation to establish a baseline, receive a discount on lessons to lean into consistent check-ins, and are able to build relationships with coaches who understand their games over time.

The Indoor Golf advantage

Keyeriah Miles, a beginner who joined 5i Atlanta, highlights something crucial: "Living in the heart of the city, the convenience has been amazing. Having consistent access to indoor practice and bag storage, especially during the winter months, has allowed me to practice more intentionally and far more often."

Indoor golf isn't just about convenience; it's also about consistency. And golf, among so many other things, requires consistency. You can't build a reliable golf swing with sporadic practice. You need repetition. You need to groove those movements until they feel automatic. Weather, daylight, and distance to the nearest golf club shouldn't determine whether you improve this year.

Our members practice in January. Our members work on their short game at 9PM on a Tuesday. Our members dial in their wedges for this weekend's tournament without worrying about space on a tee sheet or losing golf balls in the rough.

Technology meets community

Will Graf calls Five Iron "the most fun driving range I've ever been to," and that's not an accident. Yes, the technology is serious, Trackman is the gold standard in our sport, used by PGA Tour pros and top instructors worldwide. But, the experience doesn't have to feel clinical or intimidating.

Members play virtual rounds on championship courses, compete in tournaments, work on specific shots and yardages through on-course challenges, and build friendships with other golfers who are on similar improvement journeys. With so many ways to play, the space becomes an extension of your routine, not a chore you force on yourself.

"The community Five Iron has created makes practicing golf fun," Will said, "I recommend Five Iron to all of my friends who are trying to get better at golf."

Building your handicap (and your confidence)

For golfers tracking their progress through the USGA handicap system, whether you're maintaining your GHIN number or working to get a GHIN handicap for the first time, Five Iron offers something invaluable: a controlled environment where you can work on the parts of the game that drastically influence your official handicap.

Members can track their Trackman handicap, post scores, and see measurable progress through the world handicap system. But more importantly, they develop the confidence that comes from knowing their game is improving, not just hoping it is.

Meghan Young captures that perfectly: "Five Iron has truly elevated both my confidence and my love for the game."

The investment that pays off in strokes

Matthew improved by 40+ strokes in less than a year. Will went from a 15-20 handicap to 5.5. Keyeriah and Meghan both dropped from the 110s–120s into the 90s. Alex broke 90 in his first year of playing golf. Their stories aren’t unique in the sense that you could be next.

While the results seen by some of our members may resemble a GLP-1 style cheat code, becoming a Five Iron member is about much more than shaving strokes as if they’re pounds on the scale. It's about changing your relationship with practice, making it accessible, measurable, and actually enjoyable. It's about having a space where improvement isn't left to chance. It’s an invitation to be part of something that's already working for hundreds of golfers across the country.

Five strokes is just the average. Your results? Just like weight loss, it depends on how much you're willing to put into the journey.

If you're ready to stop wishing your game would improve and start building the swing, consistency, and scores you've always wanted, we've got the technology, the instruction, the community, and the swagger to make it happen for you.
